Alexandra's Story

Alexandra Valdepenas Ramirez '25 spent her summer with the Machine Learning and Data Analytics Lab at Friedrich Alexander Universitat (FAU), Erlangen, Germany. Through this experiment, she was able to learn to be quick on her feet in problem-solving, conduct psychology experiments, and analyze data.

My first project included conducting a psychology experiment, taking saliva samples and using machine learning to analyze biomechanics. For my second project, I worked on a neural network for image segmentation. The goal was to predict wound healing based on different percentages of tissues. Through UROPs, I have learned how to work in a lab and make the most of my time there. Being at a lab in Germany, exposed me to different ways of conducting research and new ideas. My German improved substantially, and by the end of the internship I felt that I made great connections at MaD Lab.

"This experience has confirmed that I want to go to grad school after graduating. Being exposed to different labs and institutions in Germany has inspired me to continue learning as much as I can so that I can be involved with that kind of research in the future."
