Asael's story

Asael Acosta '28, an earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences major, worked at CICATA in Mexico over the summer of 2025. He was able to experience working independently and delve into how atmospheric sciences and AI can be paired, but also with other hard sciences, to achieve interesting results.

"IPN is a Mexican technical institute with a campus in Querétaro, Mexico. I was working specifically at CICATA (Centro de Investigación de Ciencia Aplicada y Tecnología Avanzada). My project began as me looking to integrate the Google DeepMind model GenCast on CICATA's servers, but later morphed into researching a newer model their team developed, and eventually reshifting my focus to be on downscaling the outputs of the models to a higher resolution. The team and I were interested in specifically improving the resolutions of wind fields generated by the models since, despite their speed in generating predictions, the models operated with much coarser resolution than what is typically used in decision making."

"The experience taught me a lot about working independently and trudging through unmarked territory, which I'm certain is a soft skill that'll continue proving useful well into the future. I also learned that it's not at all difficult to connect with people, especially when you know the language. It's a big world, but there's plenty of interests that can unite people."
