Gaining a global perspective on science and research
When initially applying to MISTI MIT-Israel, Allie expected to do research on solar power and water desalination technologies. As a chemical engineering major with a concentration in energy, she was excited to take on a new project related to yet another aspect of the field. Not only did Allie explore and research these topics in depth, but she also took advantage of all of the incredible and exciting research happening at Weizmann by attending seminars and conferences throughout the institute. “I’m really interested in learning about all of the research going on in the world, both within and beyond my particular field of interest, and I found Weizmann to be a place so similar to MIT, full of incredibly intelligent people from all around the world with a passion for science. This summer I learned in so many ways, from so many people, and gained a perspective and knowledge on science and research that I don’t think I could have gotten anywhere else.”

Even beyond the gates of Weizmann, Allie really took advantage of the opportunity to explore and engage with a different culture. “Spending the summer in Israel really was so grounding and so inspiring. Living in a different culture challenged me in new ways, and by being surrounded by such down to earth, caring, passionate people, I really was able to both truly be myself and grow as a person.”
Taking the MISTI experience back to MIT
Allie has taken her MISTI experience back with her in several ways – she has delved into new energy research and engineering projects and brings new perspectives as she serves in the role of President of MIT Friends of Israel. “Really, it was truly an incredible summer, one full of memories and experiences I’ll keep forever. If I had the chance, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
