Farrah Ye in Japan

Farrah's story

Mechanical Engineering major Farrah Ye '26 studied abroad at the University of Tokyo in the spring of 2025, taking courses on sustainable engineering, materials, and Japanese language and culture. She also conducted research while at UTokyo, working on a robot to detect the ripeness mikans, a Japanese citrus fruit with important cultural value.

Having the opportunity to study abroad and do research at the University of Tokyo has been a rewarding, eye-opening learning experience that was only possible with the support from MIT. I’m beyond grateful that I’ve been able to make international friends, be exposed to different perspectives, and make memories that will stay with me forever during my short time in Japan.

"Studying at UTokyo was a great way to explore my interest in sustainability, learn about Japan’s unique challenges in energy, and expand my knowledge outside of traditional mechanical engineering topics."
