Giovanni's Story

Giovanni Avila '29, a computer science and engineering major, worked on a project to train an AI model to increase the resolution of satellite imagery of hurricanes, creating a working model that can predict hurricane paths.

“The main reason I chose Mexico for my internship destination was that I am a first-generation Mexican-American, and I had never been to Mexico before, and I saw this as an amazing opportunity to both explore the country my parents are from and gain a lot of valuable work experience at the same time.”

"This experience majorly benefitted me and how I see my chances to obtain a future one as well. I think I'm much more confident about putting myself out there and applying for an opportunity I may not be fully knowledgeable about, to try and learn as much as I can. More specifically, I want to apply more to opportunities with AI and machine learning as utilizing them was a lot of fun."
