Jorge's Story

Computation and cognition major Jorge Vera's '29 summer working in the Biomedical Neuroscience Department was the perfect combination of computer science and neuroscience that he was hoping for. This experience changed his view on research, and he's more hopeful about finding a career that will fulfill him in the future.

"I learned what it meant to work in a research lab and contribute to the project rather than being a bystander learning about what the people in the lab do. It was my first real introduction to research, and it was such an enjoyable experience that makes me hopeful for what I could do in the future. Apart from this, it has also been an incredible experience career-wise. Because I'm now deeply involved in the project and will be part of the paper they plan to publish, this experience has provided me with my first tangible contribution that can be referred back to."

"I found it important to learn from your colleagues and ask questions to get a better feel for the work culture and to make the most of that experience. My colleagues always emphasized that I never had to feel pressured and that I could relax, and leaning into their advice greatly improved my experience."
