Maria's Story

Maria Calvo (BS Mechanical Engineering, Finance '29) traveled to Prague, Czech Republic, in summer 2026 to work on a cultural diplomacy research project at the "Ukraine in a Changing Europe" Research Center at Charles University.

"My partner and I assisted in transcribing and analyzing transcripts of interviews conducted at the Eurovision song contest. We also did work in coding AI analysis models and AI agents for social media discourse analysis. In addition to technical work, we conducted outreach with Generation for Ukraine. ... Since we were working on Ukraine-focused research, the most pressing societal issue that I encountered was the ongoing war in Ukraine. I met multiple Ukrainians who were displaced as a result of the war and heard about their experiences moving to a new country and the ongoing challenge of having a war ravage their home. It was very moving to hear their stories, and I think it was an important reminder that there are so many people still suffering at the hands of war." -Maria Calvo

background
“The program allowed me to contribute to cultural research in support of Ukraine and conduct outreach with young Ukrainians in the area, which was incredibly valuable, eye-opening, and fulfilling. Living in Prague also allowed me to expand my worldview and to be immersed in Czech culture, which is something that I greatly appreciate and will never forget. MISTI Ukraine is an amazing way for MIT students to gain international experience and use our skills to aid in supporting Ukraine in any way we can during this time of conflict. ”
