Joseph's Story

EECS and Math major, Joseph Cahaly '24 travelled to Singapore in summer 2022 to work with the NUS Ubicomp Lab which focuses on Explainable AI and Human Computer Interaction.

"I worked on an explainable AI model that predicted cardiovascular disease. Given a PCG scan (audio recording of the heart), my model predicted what disease a person had based on the PCG data, along with annotating the audio data in such a way that a medical professional would understand why the AI model made the decision that it did. As a Course 6-3 major, my computer science background helped me quickly pick up the necessary skills to do my research. I went into the internship without any formal AI background, but was able to learn quickly."

"This was my first research experience. It has really opened my eyes to research and academia, which I actually quite enjoyed. I also am more willing to live abroad after college. I found that I really strive to integrate with the local culture of wherever I am. I took a lot of effort to surround myself with local Singaporeans."
