Laker at Barcelona ULTA

Laker's Story

Laker Newhouse (Mathematics '25) had the opportunity to work with the UA-Teens and Ukraine Leadership and Technology Academy (ULTA) in the summer 2023, when he traveled to Barcelona, Spain, to teach and mentor 20 rigorously-selected Ukrainian high school students.

"Ukraine Leadership and Technology Academy (ULTA) is a tuition-free educational program for Ukrainian high school students in grades 9 and 10. Our participants show a strong passion for technology, active engagement in their communities, proficiency in English, and enthusiasm for learning from MIT mentors. Using MIT’s open education resources, we aim to bridge the rigor of MIT education and the perspectives of Ukrainian students."

"ULTA is visionary. I’ve never met more eager learners, deep thinkers, and driven implementers than the 20 ULTA finalists I had the honor to teach. Because ULTA bridges technology and communication skills, it fills the gap left when schools in Ukraine don’t teach how to present one’s ideas. Now, every ULTA finalist is pursuing a project to rebuild Ukraine. These projects are meaningful, yearlong commitments, ranging from education to search-and-rescue aid after missile attacks. Supporting these students is supporting Ukraine."
