Opalina's Story

Opalina Vetrichelvan interned at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool and worked on a research project to build an AI model to predict length of stay (LoS) of pediatric patients admitted.

My department was the data science team in Alder Hey Innovation. My first task was to conduct a literature review and identify relevant risk factors that affect LoS. After identifying which factors to consider from our hospital records, I built the model using python and the sklearn library. I found that concepts I had learned in my MIT machine learning class (6.036) were proving to be helpful, and the project made me revisit many concepts touched in the class. I had never applied machine learning to a data set before fully independently, so this was a very significant experience as I learned how to go through the whole modelling process, from data cleaning, feature selection, to the actual modelling."

"This experience greatly influenced my career path and pathway at MIT. Previously, even though I had taken classes on machine learning, I had never actually applied machine learning in an actual project. Through this internship, I was able to execute every step of the project, from data cleaning, to feature selection, to modeling, with both independence and guidance. This has been the work experience where I have gained the most skills."
