Alexandra's Story

"I worked on trying to improve the amount of black soldier fly larvae harvested relative to the amount of organic waste put into the system."

Sanergy uses organic waste collected from around Nairobi to feed black soldier fly larvae. These larvae are then harvested and sold as animal feed. I worked on trying to improve the amount of black soldier fly larvae harvested relative to the amount of organic waste put into the system. I designed and ran several trials to try to discover what factors contribute most to larvae yield. I was also involved with analyzing this data and suggesting courses of action based on trial results.

"My experience with MISTI-Africa impacted me significantly in two ways. The first is that I gained practical skills relevant to my education while working on an important, impactful project. The second is that I had the opportunity to be immersed in a new culture, and gained insight into life on the continent.”
