Vicky's Story

Vicky Li '24, went to Tokyo, Japan during the summer of 2022 and worked at the Internet Business of Japan’s Webstaff Group (IBJ) to recreate the department website using a different language and framework.

"Since our project was to recreate webpages to a different framework, I worked on the frontend and backend of the newer version. I developed the front and back end—about 30 pages. When all pages are developed and the database/API is fixed and completed the pages I worked on will be live and used by the company. I further developed my web development skills and knowledge, by working with different frameworks. I also improved my communication skills, both in a professional setting and in a more casual setting. In the beginning it was nerve wrecking especially with all the manners that Japanese office workers follow. I was scared of making a mistake or unintentionally offending them by acting accordingly to American culture. However, my coworkers made me feel welcome and made it easier to interact with them. By the end of the internship I felt more confident and comfortable when talking to them."

"Everything is scary at first, but there are so many people who want to help you. It's an opportunity to have new experiences, become more independent, and grow out of your bubble."
