Tim's Story at Kimura Lab

"I was hosted by Shinichi Kimura, a former pharmacologist who now builds satellites and groundbreaking technology for space colonies. With his help, I learned how to design circuit boards and then built a small camera for his satellite that would track space debris in order to be cleared. The camera was built using a new method that had not been done before to make it smaller, and by building it I was able to learn how to conduct academic research.

Before this summer, I was sure that I hated research. But now, a future in academia doesn’t sound so bad.

My host was very prepared to take on students and had me directly involved in real work from the very start. My project felt meaningful and impactful, and as such I would definitely recommend professor Kimura’s lab at Tokyo University of Science to anyone looking for a summer internship.
