Trevor's Story

Trevor Kodzis is considering a PhD program and this summer experience was an opportunity for him to gain fieldwork experience and build relationships in the international development and urban planning sector.

For my MISTI research project, the host organization we worked with was IIT, Bombay. The project we worked on was examining the effect of transportation infrastructure on urbanization in the North of India. I travelled to 12 different cities in the National Capital Region, Haryana, and Punjab where I met with urban planners, politicians, activists, professors, industrialists, and local residents to learn more about the developments in each city. For each interview, I wrote a summary that will help my professors and the lab better understand what urbanization looks like on the ground. I also made sure to include perspectives from contrasting perspectives to see how policy makers and locals see infrastructure projects differently.

It was an invaluable experience to be able to conduct research abroad, even more so in India. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am so grateful to be able to have seen so much of the country and meet so many incredible people as a result of this project. I am considering starting a PhD program in the future, and this summer was an incredible opportunity to gain field work experience, and make various contacts in the international development and urban planning world.
