Yijun Yang in a white lab coat and safety glasses in a lab in France

Yijun's story

Senior Yijun Yang, a chemical engineering major, spent her summer with TotalEnergies in the southwest of France for 10 weeks. Yijun loves learning about other language and being in an international lab has impacted her to apply for work places with an opportunity to travel or be in an international team.

TotalEnergies is an international energy company. They have a division for R&D, and I was a 10-week intern in their R&D division at the Lacq site in southwest France. My project was an exploration into CO2 adsorption in nanochannels. I built new protocols for the company on how manufacture multiple-thickness resin structures on silicon wafers. I also built prototypes for high-throughput experiments for testing adsorbents in CO2 adsorption. I also analyzed samples with Raman spectroscopy and other microscopy techniques and fine-tuned protocols for adhering adsorbent to polymers.

This experience was great for me to really immerse myself in a French environment. I achieved a level of language and cultural learning that I would never be able to achieve from just studying at home. I also learned plenty of laboratory techniques that could prove useful in the future.
