Andy's Story

Andy Zheng '27 finished off his freshman year with a summer internship at the Central Bank of Armenia. He learned what it meant to tell a story with data and share about the rich culture he's experienced while in Armenia.

"For my internship, I researched bank runs, the phenomenon of depositors withdrawing money from the bank around the same time frame due to loss of trust. I had access to around 3 million data points tracking deposits throughout 12 banks in Armenia. I cleaned and ran regressions to investigate how effective the deposit insurance scheme is among different currency holders. I also investigated how other factors such as region, average deposit maturity length, and average number of deposits per year affect a depositor's chance of running. In the end, I presented my results in front of the whole board and the bank's deputy governor."

"This experience gave me a glimpse into what real economic research feels like, working with something tangible and valuable in the real world was really eye-opening. Although it is unlikely that I fully pursue Econ in the future, I'm so grateful for the lessons I learned throughout the process."
