Applying MIT education to summer internship

Ashley Margetts, a mechanical engineering major, worked on developing new maritime technology at Kongsberg Maritime, outside of Oslo. She leveraged skills from her MIT coursework and created new connections with her international colleagues - and also enjoyed Norway's stunning natural beauty.

I worked in the maritime sector, which focuses on research and development for new marine technology. I was working with a group of interns to develop the controls, simulation, and data analysis of an autonomous ferry. I worked on the control algorithms and the connection to the simulator. I took my experience in control theory from MIT and applied it to a real system. This ferry was the largest system I have ever controlled, and I learned a lot about anticipating environmental conditions on the ocean to create successful vessel control.

"This experience solidified my interests in marine autonomy, while also making me realize that I want to work with more hands-on work. I was just working with software, and I missed being able to see a physical product while I am working."
