Carley's Story

Carley Chen '29 said her summer was the most transformative. It was her first time in Europe with opportunities to build her confidence in voicing her opinions in a room full of experts.

"I worked as a guest researcher at Hasso Plattner Institut (HPI) under the Data Analytics and Computational Statistics chair. My project was an extension of Jakub and Mel's (my supervisors') work and consisted of machine learning research on language models for DNA Sequence modeling. I was able to employ some pre-existing technical skills, such as Python coding and running machine learning pipelines. The majority of my work, however, was completely foreign to me and required a lot of learning."

It has been an incredible opportunity that has broadened both my personal and professional perspectives in ways I never could have experienced on campus alone. I was able to learn not only from my work but also from the everyday cultural exchanges that happened in conversations with colleagues, while exploring the city, and even over meals at local restaurants.
