Eileen Liu in Hong Kong

Eileen's Story

Computer Science, Economics, and Data Science (Course 6-14) and Mathematics (Course 18) double-major Eileen Liu '24 studied abroad at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), taking courses in discrete math, topology, Cantonese, and theater.

My study abroad experience made me want to learn more Cantonese for a few reasons. First, I would be able to communicate more easily in Hong Kong. Second, I could better appreciate Cantopop and all the old Hong Kong movies. Third, I’d previously studied Mandarin and Japanese and in some ways I think Cantonese bridges the gap between these two, so I found it pretty interesting to study. I did take a Cantonese course during the semester, but perhaps in the future I will study more on my own.

“I was scared to start again in a place where I didn’t know anyone, but spending the semester in Hong Kong gave me the opportunity to make friends from around the world and have experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Whether it was going to my first music festival, seeing the entire island from a mountaintop, or just baking cookies with friends, there were so many moments in Hong Kong that made me think it was all worth it. I’m really glad I pushed myself to try something new.”
