My study abroad experience made me want to learn more Cantonese for a few reasons. First, I would be able to communicate more easily in Hong Kong. Second, I could better appreciate Cantopop and all the old Hong Kong movies. Third, I’d previously studied Mandarin and Japanese and in some ways I think Cantonese bridges the gap between these two, so I found it pretty interesting to study. I did take a Cantonese course during the semester, but perhaps in the future I will study more on my own.

“I was scared to start again in a place where I didn’t know anyone, but spending the semester in Hong Kong gave me the opportunity to make friends from around the world and have experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Whether it was going to my first music festival, seeing the entire island from a mountaintop, or just baking cookies with friends, there were so many moments in Hong Kong that made me think it was all worth it.
