A summer focused on marine autonomy

A summer at Trondheim, Norway, Erin Menezes worked with the Aquaculture Robotics group with SINTEF. This internship solidified her decision in which field she wanted to pursue especially as she starts a master's degree in the fall after her summer internship.

"I was a part of the Aquaculture Robotics group working on using underwater robots and sensors to better inspect, monitor, and maintain fish pens in which farmers raise fish.  I worked on developing and integrating code meant for an underwater vehicle to follow a fish in a fish pen. During my internship, I was able to create a guidance law, controller, and dynamic vehicle model in ROS2 for the process, as well as integrate my code with the fish detection algorithm developed by a previous student. I then verified that the code worked with lots of graphs and analysis, so I hope that it can be easily used on a vehicle in the future."

"I built on my controls background by learning about more complicated controllers and learned about how to integrate navigation, guidance, and control algorithms using ROS2, an operating system that I know will be very relevant for me in future work. I had a lot of time to put into my internship, and I enjoyed every minute. I feel as though I have finally found a field that I want to pursue in the future, especially as I start a Master’s degree this Fall."

"This summer's internship was an experiment to see if I enjoyed what I had told myself I wanted to do in the future, and I would like to report that the experiment was successful! I think I have found a field that I am very interested in, gathered many great contacts in this field, experienced a wonderful country, gained the courage to go on hikes myself but also learned what my limitations are, and can now live independently."
