Jaden's Story

During the summer of 2024, Jaden Anderson traveled to Manaus, Brazil. He split his time between two research groups: the Institute for Clinical Research in the Amazon (IPCCB) at Fundação de Medicina Tropical and the Koolen Group at the Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (UEA). His research focused on investigating natural compounds extracted from Amazonian fungi and plants, with potential applications in medicine.

The IPCCB is home to multiple research fronts; the one I worked with was centered on clinical trials of compounds against Malaria(focused either on Malaria cycles in humans or in mosquitos. At UEA, I was part of the research group that focuses on natural products produced by fungi and plants within the Amazon Rainforest, with various motivations behind each project. Besides learning about the management of mosquitos for dissections and assays, and some other malaria-specific assays, most of the lab techniques I did during my time in Manaus were not new. However, my proficiency in the lab techniques I practiced here has definitely increased. Understanding column chromatography and TLC will be essential for my future research, and I am now much more confident doing each of these.

"I was able to continue gaining research experience in biochemistry, which is the field I want to pursue a doctorate. I also was able to experience a different culture of lab work, and at a lab not as economically privileged. It's important to me that I understand some of the ways research labs can differ."
