Maria, an architecture and mechanical engineering major, has always been intrigued by the intersection of design, technology, and culture. After moving from Mexico to Texas at nine and later to Boston, she returned to Mexico last summer, where the unchanged landscape reinforced her belief in the importance of experiencing new environments. This led her to join the MIT Arab World Dubai Accelerator program during IAP, seeking exposure to a diverse cultural and professional setting.
In Dubai, Maria was inspired by the city’s architectural marvels, from the Burj Khalifa to its cultural landmarks, deepening her understanding of how architecture mirrors societal values and economic ambition. The program offered her invaluable insights as she collaborated with entrepreneurs and startups, applying her engineering skills to innovate and solve challenges.
Adapting to a new culture came with hurdles, but her previous travel experiences helped her build resilience. She learned basic Arabic to connect better with locals and fully embraced Dubai's vibrant life, from exploring souks to trying traditional Emirati cuisine.
Maria aims to integrate sustainability and innovation in architectural design based on her experiences in Dubai. This transformative journey not only expanded her worldview but also solidified her commitment to cultural exchange in architecture and engineering. She is eager to make a lasting impact in her field by applying the insights gained from the program.
