Tian Lin's Story

Double majoring in EECS and Theater Arts, Tian Lin '24 took the summer of 2022 to study abroad in Berlin, Germany, focusing on experimental theater and devising a theater piece on friendship and loneliness.

"I participated in the Summer Theater Intensive which has three main components, experiencing local Berlin Theater, receiving instruction from local theater arts instructors, and devising (aka create from scratch) a final performance with our group that incorporates elements of German theater in our art piece. There are also elements of cultural exploration dispersed into the program including but not limited to a guiding tour of museum island and a visit to the Jewish museum. I devised a theater piece at the end of the program about friendship and loneliness. Since I have taken quite a lot of theater classes at MIT, I wasn’t thrown off guard by the material at Bard College Berlin. I also learned to be very punctual since Germans take being on time very seriously."

This trip has been such a formative experience for me as a young adult. I realized that traveling abroad isn’t as scary as I made it out to be. Rather I thrive in new environments and with new experiences. Breathe and have fun. Anywhere you go, anything you do, if you are having a bad day, don’t feel bad about staying in. You gain the most from your study abroad or internship experience when you enjoy yourself.
