There is A LOT of Mexican slang, words that are only used by Mexicans and not other Spanish speakers. Read below for a few words and phrases that should help you in Mexico!
Chido
Cool or awesome
e.g. “Que chido estuvo el juego”
¡Híjole!
Oh my Gosh or shoot!
e.g. “Híjole, no creo llegar a tiempo!”
¡Guácala!
Disgusting or gross
e.g. ¡Guácala sabe horrible el café!
Reventón
A party
e.g. “Te invito a un reventón en mi casa”
¡Aguas!
Look out!
e.g. “¡Aguas! Viene un auto!”
Sale (SA-lay)
Sure, or I agree
e.g. Person a: ¿Vamos al cine?
Person b: sale, vamos
¿Qué onda?
What’s up?
e.g. ¿Qué onda? ¿qué vas a hacer hoy?
Tirar la onda
To flirt
e.g. “Ayer, le tiré la onda a Ana”
¡órale!
Positively: cool, or sounds great, or yes
e.g. órale, vamos a tu casa
Negatively: what the heck
¡Qué padre! / ¡Está padre!
Cool! Or awesome! Or nice!
e.g. “Que padre está tu vestido”!
“Me la pase muy padre en tu fiesta”!
“El avión”
Forgot something or didn’t pay attention to something.
e.g. “Se me fue el avión y no fui al supermercado”
¡No manches!
No way! Or it could refer to something good as well
e.g. “Que no manche, no voy a ir al cine con él”
Güey / wey
A lot of Mexicans, mainly younger people, use this word often in conversation, but it is very informal and not respectful. Among friends you will hear people use it, and they won’t get offended. You would not use this word in a formal setting or with your boss or older people, or your parents, only among friends but honestly, it is not nice!
It means buddy/pal (both male and female) but also dumb (or a bit worse).
