What to expect

  • The host family will treat you like one of their children. They will do your laundry and want to stay in close communication with you.
  • You should be given a key to the apartment/house.
  • Most families live in small apartments and are used to close quarters and do not have the same privacy norms we may be used to. Don’t be surprised if while you are out someone goes into your room to make your bed or rearrange things.
  • Expect to be invited to events, meals or outings with your host family after school or on the weekends.  Andorrans and Spaniards are proud of their culture, cities, and networks and will want to share them with you. Try to say Sí!
  • Bring a small gift for your family (and children). It could be something from MIT or from your hometown. A mug, magnet or local candies. Make sure it’s wrapped well so it doesn’t break on the way.
  • If you are going out for the evening, let your host family know. It’s ok if you will be out late, but they need to know not to use a double lock on the door if they go to sleep before you return!

More Tips

  • Heating costs in Spain and Andorra are about three times what ours are, and therefore, the apartments may be cooler than you are used to.  Bring a sweater or a sweatshirt to layer clothing in the house. Bring warm nightwear.
  • Electricity is very expensive in Spain and Andorra. Be respectful. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Most hallways and stairways in Spanish apartment buildings have timed switches that you may have to turn on in order to get to and from the main entryway.
  • Normal meal-times in Spain and Andorra for lunch and dinner are about 2:30 for lunch and dinner is at  9:00pm -10:00pm during the week and 10:00pm – midnight on the weekends. Always let your family know in advance if you won’t be there for dinner!
  • Sobremesa – friends and family love to spend time chatting – expect to sit at the table discussing all types of topics for extended periods of time. After dinner or during weekend meals.
  • The kitchen in your homestay belongs to the family. You should ask if it is ok to store food in the family refrigerator or prepare food on your own.
