MISTI wants you to be aware of the risks of consuming drugs or alcohol while abroad

MISTI policy on drugs and alcohol

You should NEVER travel with or consume any type of recreational drugs while participating in a MISTI program. Marijuana remains illegal under U.S. federal law and all U.S. airport security check personnel operate under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Security Administration, a federal agency. You could be detained or worse for the discovery of recreational drugs in your baggage or on your person, before ever leaving the U.S.

All prescription drugs carried internationally must be transported in their original, labeled containers, and include your name, the name of the medication (brand name and generic) and the dosage and quantity prescribed.

If you are of drinking age in the country you are visiting, you should be very cautious with the amount of alcohol you consume. Excessive alcohol consumption may result in alcohol poisoning, which can be life-threatening, if not fatal.

Be aware that

Your consumption of alcohol or drugs and/or your behavior while under the influence, might lead to a violation of local laws, in addition to MIT policy, and put you at greater risk as a potential target for crime. You might be subject to fines, arrest, imprisonment and/or deportation.

Accidents and injuries are common among those who consume too much alcohol or drugs.  It might impair your judgment and sensory motor skills.

Emergency and/or medical response will vary from country to country, and you may not get appropriate and/or timely emergent care, especially if you’re unable to provide the clinicians with any useful information regarding the reason for your current medical state.

Remember that while traveling abroad through MISTI, you are representing MIT and must comply with all MIT policies, including in the Mind and Hand Book.
