Program Opportunities

Note: Per MIT’s international travel risk policy,  we are temporarily not sponsoring programs that involve student travel to Colombia, including internships and Global Teaching Labs.

MIT-Colombia matches MIT students with internships at leading companies, research labs and universities in Colombia. These opportunities are usually 8-12 weeks for the summer depending on the host and are available year-round up to 12 months. Per MISTI’s mission, they are set up to be cost-neutral in order to allow as many participants as possible to gain this unique professional and personal development.

  • Open to MIT undergrads, graduating seniors and graduate students in all disciplines
  • 4.0 or better GPA

Undergraduates:

  • Spanish IV or equivalent proficiency
  • Cultural course

Graduate students:

  • No language requirement; basic Spanish strongly recommended
  • Cultural course highly recommended

  • Complete the MISTI Launchpad Application – December 1
  • Interview with Country Program Manager – October to February (as soon as MISTI Launchpad Application is complete)
  • Commit to MIT-Colombia Program – By February 1
  • Once approved, complete the County-Specific Application – Deadline set by MIT-Colombia Manager. Country Program Manager begins to explore potential hosts once complete.
  • Internship matching process – January to March
  • Mandatory Pre-Departure Sessions – Late March to Early May

How to Apply

MISTI Global Teaching Labs offers a unique opportunity for MIT students to teach STEM subjects in Colombian high schools over IAP.

Students will teach STEM subjects such as physics, chemistry, math, biology, computer science, robotics. In most cases, each student is paired up with a local teacher. Some schools will require MIT students to create classes/workshops.

We usually place at least two MIT students per high school or university.

  • 4.0 GPA or better
  • No language requirements although some Spanish is preferred
  • Open to MIT undergrads, graduating seniors and graduate students in all disciplines.
  • We are seeking highly motivated students who are looking forward to teaching
  • Please refer to the How to Apply page for MISTI GTL application instructions and deadlines.
  • Interviews will be held and final selection will be made by the first or second week of October
  • Once selected to participate, students must attend Global Teaching Labs training sessions (dates TBD) and a checkout meeting with the Program Manager
  • Schools will be assigned between November 30th and December 15 (or earlier)
