A fun and fulfilling experience in Norway
Beckett joined SINTEF, one of Europe's largest independent research organizations, in Trondheim, Norway. There, he worked on a project to optimize feeding recommendations on salmon farms in Norway.
"By using the data from the farms and the fish, I was able to develop models that produced better feeding recommendations than currently exist for improved outcomes in fish growth and feed conversion. Resulting from my project, I was able to create a model that accurately predicts outcomes of the farm based on input features and feed amount, and I was also able to create the final model that predicted feed amounts that improved the growth and feed conversion metrics around 85% of the time over the current feed recommendations."
He utilized skills he'd gained in coursework and previous UROPs in order to be successful.
"I used my skills in ML and Data Processing. I learned some new techniques in machine learning, and learned some things about IoT and MQTT."
Outside of work, Beckett also got to explore Norway's stunning environmental beauty through hiking trips he took with friends and fellow interns at SINTEF.
"My favorite part was going hiking around Norway. With the other students in Trondheim, many weekends we would go to a place to hike up a mountain or spend time in the woods or mountains."
