Learn about Vittorio's internship in Kolkata, India!
Vittorio (B.S. Aerospace Engineering; Physics '22) is assisting in a "Train the Trainer" workshop with the Lily Foundation in India to help teachers organize their own workshops and experimental learning opportunities in STEM. By accessing elements of MIT's hands-on learning style, the goal is to enable educators to create programs in subjects such as web development and app design.
What is your daily commute like?
I’m living at the site of my internship, so my commute is just a walk downstairs! But soon we’ll be driving to another village, where I’ll host my second workshop.
What does your typical work day look like?
Each morning I wake up around 7:30 am and work on my lesson for the day, which takes a few hours. Then from 3 pm to 6 pm I host my workshop and walk teachers through different exercises in Excel, PowerPoint, and website development. Afterwards I usually chat with everyone or visit local sites with my hosts.
Have you visited any new places?
I have really enjoyed visiting sites like the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir temple in Kolkata and learning about their cultural significance. In Ghatsila, it was also exciting going into town and trying different street foods.
Have you experienced any new foods and what has been your favorite?
I have definitely been trying a lot of new foods since I arrived in India! So far I’ve had sambar, kachori, aloo dum, aloo chop, idli, appam, dahi vada, and momo. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I’ve really enjoyed momo. Not to mention all the sauces and spices. The food has definitely been one of the highlights of the trip!
