Well located within one of the top global cities, UNSW Sydney offers students the best of both worlds — world-class beaches and stunning parklands within a vibrant, cosmopolitan harbor-side city. Ideally positioned as the gateway to the Asia Pacific, Sydney is home to more global firms than any other Australian city, fostering an energetic business community and numerous opportunities for students’ academic and professional development.

Academic Calendar

In 2019, UNSW Sydney transitions to a new academic calendar titled UNSW3+. Comprised of three terms plus a January term, UNSW3+ is designed to better align with our global partners, eliminating overlap with the Northern Hemisphere summer and creating new opportunities for career and internship-minded students.

The innovative UNSW3+ academic calendar offers students flexible study plans to suit their plans and academic credit requirements of their home institution. It features three 10-week terms per year plus a 5-week term in January and/or August. Students can come for a single Term, Tailored Term, or full-year experience and take advantage of the flexible timings to undertake their Study Abroad or Exchange at UNSW Sydney.

You must meet the admissions standards outlined by UNSW.

MISTI applicants need to:

  • Have a GPA of 4.0 or above
  • In good academic standing
  • In good judicial standing
  • Up to date with the Communication Requirement
  • Up to date with HASS courses

Contact MISTI if you have questions about your particular situation.

Two-part application process:

  1. Apply directly to the University of New South Wales by the stated deadline for the program/term you wish to study abroad. More information about the application process can be found here: Apply Now and Study Abroad Student Application Portal
  2. Apply through MISTI for approval to study abroad. Apply by the deadline for the term in which you plan to study abroad.

Study Options

As a comprehensive, research-intensive university, UNSW Sydney offers hundreds of courses across nine academic faculties during our terms and tailored terms.

For a full listing of the UNSW courses on offer, please visit the UNSW Student Handbook.

For a listing of the January and August courses on offer, please see the UNSW Tailored Terms booklet.

Transfer Credit

Information on the transfer credit process at MIT can be found here.

For this program, you will pay for tuition, accommodation, and other living expenses directly to NSW or in-country (depending on the category of expense) and not to MIT.

Financial aid is portable for this program. A few months before departure, SFS and MISTI will share with students the most up-to-date budget for participation on the program based on an agreement with NSW.

Admitted students who receive financial aid should make an appointment with the financial aid representative to whom they are assigned to discuss the particulars.

Sydney is a safe, accessible and vibrant city, with public transport connecting the UNSW campuses, beaches, and city center. This means students living both on and off campus can enjoy all that Sydney has to offer.

The Study Abroad program has reserved rooms on campus with a range of options available. Due to limited availability, please apply by the housing deadline to ensure your application will be considered.

Many students also live off-campus and enjoy the beautiful surrounding suburbs. UNSW campus is located in the Eastern Suburbs and many students choose to live by the beach in places such as Coogee, Bondi Beach, Clovelly or Maroubra; or instead find accommodation closer to the bustling city center of Sydney and our iconic harbor.

Apply for UNSW Student Housing via the Study Abroad application portal if interested in living on-campus.
