More Information on the DIS Direct Enroll Program

We believe a study abroad program should lean into its location through place-based learning. DIS courses go beyond the typical classroom walls and venture out to explore the city, Scandinavia, and broader Europe, making the most out of your academics abroad.

All of your courses will journey on Study Tours around Stockholm or Copenhagen, where your faculty bring you to research labs, local businesses, non-profit organizations, and other relevant sites to speak with experts and decision-makers in the field.

Read about the semester program here or about the two cities that DIS calls home in Scandinavia.

MIT students can study with DIS for the Fall or Spring.

Fall Semester Dates: mid-August to mid-December

Spring Semester Dates: mid-January to mid-May

We recommend verifying program start and end dates directly with DIS: DIS Calendar

You must meet the admissions standards outlined by DIS

To be approved by MIT to study abroad, applicants should be:

  • In good academic standing
  • In good judicial standing

For Academic Year, Spring, or Fall terms applicants should ensure they are:

  • Up to date with the Communication Requirement
  • Up to date with HASS courses

Contact MISTI if you have questions about your particular situation.

Two-part application process:

  1. Apply directly to DIS by the stated deadline for the program/term you wish to study abroad.
  2. Apply here for MISTI approval to study abroad. Apply before the DIS deadline for the term in which you plan to study abroad.

Study Options

Explore course options in DIS' Course Finder. Use the favorites feature to keep track of courses you are interested in.

All students at DIS take between 12 and 15 credits per semester.

Students then choose a Core Course, which includes two Study Tours and determines whether you’ll study in Stockholm or Copenhagen. Then you will fill out your semester by selecting 3-4 additional courses (in the same city as your Core Course) that align with your academic goals and interests.

Transfer Credit

Information on the transfer credit process at MIT can be found here.

Within 30 days of term completion, DIS issues an official Final Grade Report. The final grade report lists all courses in which you were officially registered, with the amount of credit and grades for each course in English. The Final Grade Report may include withdrawn courses, if required by your home institution. See more info on the grading and course enrollment policies here.

For this program, you will pay for tuition, accommodation, and other living expenses directly to DIS, and not to MIT.

Financial aid for year or semester programs:

Aid is portable. A few months before departure, SFS and MISTI will share with the students and the most up-to-date budget for the participation on the program based on an agreement with the host institution. Admitted students who receive financial aid should make an appointment with the financial aid representative to whom they are assigned to discuss the particulars; they should bring the budget received from MISTI to that meeting.

DIS guarantees housing for all students who request it.

DIS housing is located across various neighborhoods and suburbs, making you part of a local community—not just a study-abroad bubble. With a few exceptions who live within walking distance, most students commute to class everyday using public transportation covered by DIS.

For semester students, you’ll list top two housing preferences, and we’ll place you in the best available option based on your preferences, essay, and other registration details. If applying to Living and Learning Communities (LLCs), two themes count as two preferences.

See the options and application process for semester-long housing here
