Study Options

At Queen Mary University of London, the classes (or ‘modules’) are normally worth 15 credits per semester, though there are some worth 30 credits. You will take 60 credits a semester, or a total of 120 credits for a full year.

As a student on our Study Abroad Programme, you can take modules from across the whole range of our academic schools, allowing you to specialise according to your own interests, knowing that each session will be thought-provoking, challenging and exciting in equal measure.

If a module has any prerequisites they will be listed in the module directory description. To participate in the module, you will need to have proof (such as an official transcript from your home university) that details that you have taken a module of similar nature to the Queen Mary pre-requisite module to be able to join the module. It is ultimately up to the School where the module is taught to determine if any coursework from your home university will be considered as sufficient pre-requisite equivalent material.

See more details and tips on choosing and registering for modules here.

Transfer Credit

Information on the transfer credit process at MIT can be found here.

Grades are released in the summer; students will receive their transcript through Gradintelligence following the official results release date in the summer.

Queen Mary credits will be translated by your home institution into their own credit system (e.g. four credits per module for a 16-credit semester system).

Students will pay tuition and living costs to QMUL. More information can be found here: Fees and finances

Financial aid for year or semester programs:

Aid is portable. A few months before departure, SFS and MISTI will share with the students and the most up-to-date budget for the participation on the program based on an agreement with the host institution. Admitted students who receive financial aid should make an appointment with the financial aid representative to whom they are assigned to discuss the particulars; they should bring the budget received from MISTI to that meeting.

As a student studying abroad with us from outside of Europe, you are eligible to apply for Queen Mary accommodation. Queen Mary housing is not guaranteed, this is subject to availability and deadlines being met. However, where possible we endeavour to house students on our Mile End Campus or with a partner accommodation provider in the local area or within a short commute of the Mile End campus.

See more details and information on how to apply for housing here.

UK Visa

UK ETA

Starting January 8th 2025, US passport holders (and many other nations) will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation in order to enter the UK. It typically takes 3 business days to process (but be prepared in advance, because it occasionally takes longer).

Do not simply google “UK ETA” and click on the first sponsored link, as this will take you to third party services which will charge you an exorbitant and unnecessary fee to process. Rather, please visit this UK government website, download the UK ETA app on your smartphone, and follow the instructions. The cost is $13/£10.

Once approved, you will get an email confirming you have got an ETA. It will be linked to the passport you applied with. Your ETA lasts for 2 years. You can enter the UK as many times as you want during that time, up to 6 months stay.
