Sahil Mohan Summer 2023

Learn about Sahil's research!

This summer, Sahil Mohan (MArch '23) conducted an independent research project on
Architecture; Water, Spiritual Architecture, and the Hindu Kush Himalayan Ice Sheet.

Read the below interview with Sahil to learn more!

What is your research like day-to-day?
My research consisted of traveling and documenting an interest in how water infrastructure is built and represented (drawn) in ancient Hindu and Buddhist architecture. Day to day included visiting sites, 3D scanning them, drawing, and reading!

What is an aspect of your work that you're excited about?
An aspect of the work that I was most excited about was getting to see sites that I have had bookmarked for years on my computer, in person! It was a lot of fun to be able to look at these sites with a close eye and speculate what they were like in the past.

Have you visited any new/exciting places?
Turtuk in Ladakh! Turtuk is a gateway to the Siachen Glacier which is a heavily militarized border between China and India. It was really interesting to see how questions of spirituality and defense become intertwined- particularly in the context of how water plays a central role in both.

Have you tried any new foods you enjoyed or seen anything new?
Momos!!! First time having authentic momos, and they might be (or in general dumpling varieties of food) my favorite food.
