More Information on the NTU Direct Enroll Program

NTU's Visiting Student Program is designed for outstanding current students of overseas/partner institutions who wish to broaden their horizons while earning credits at NTU, one of the world's leading institutions of higher education. While enrolled as a non-degree-seeking but full-time student, you are permitted to gain access to and take advantage of NTU's fullest range of academic programs.

The duration of studies could be either one semester or one academic year.

Read more in the pre-arrival booklet here.

MIT students on the exchange can study at NTU for the Fall, Spring, or Academic Year.

First (Fall) Semester Dates: Late August to January

Second (Spring) Semester Dates: Early February to June

We recommend verifying program start and end dates directly with NTU: Academic Calendar

You must meet the admissions standards outlined by National Taiwan University. For details check here. (You would be a visiting student, NOT an exchange student.)

Applicants for National Taiwan University need to be:

  • GPA of 4.0 or above
  • In good academic standing
  • In good judicial standing
  • Up to date with the Communication Requirement
  • Up to date with HASS courses

Contact MISTI if you have questions about your particular situation.

Application to the study abroad (visiting student) program at National Taiwan University is a two-part process:

  1. Apply directly to National Taiwan University by the deadline stated on their website.
  2. Apply through MISTI for approval to study abroad. Apply before the NTU deadline for the term in which you plan to study abroad.

Course Options

NTU encourages visiting students to first check for the list of colleges and departments at NTU to gain a general idea about where you can look for courses. You can take courses from all colleges and departments as long as they are not restricted. Find course restrictions on the Visiting Program page.

Visiting students are required to take at least 4 credits (or 2 courses) per semester. Students should also satisfy the requirements from their home universities - MIT students should plan to take 4 courses.

You can find recommended courses taught in English here, as well as Chinese language-learning courses.

Find more instructions on course selection here.

Transfer Credit

Information on the transfer credit process at MIT can be found here.

If you have completed the de-registration procedures at the end of your study at NTU, you shall expect to receive the electronic transcript to your personal email address in mid-March (Fall Semester) or mid-September (Spring Semester). In addition, if you need your transcripts directly sent to your home university, NTU accepts one additional email address to receive your official transcript, please fill in the survey (link will be provided to you through email) before the deadline of the de-registration period. For more information about the electronic transcript, please visit Academic Affairs at "Information for the Official Electronic Transcript".

For this program, you will pay for tuition, accommodation, and other living expenses directly to NTU or in country (depending on the category of expense) and not to MIT.

Financial aid is portable for this program. A few months before departure, SFS and MISTI will share with the students the most up-to-date budget for the participation on the program based on an agreement with National Taiwan University.

Admitted students who receive financial aid should make an appointment with the financial aid representative to whom they are assigned to discuss the particulars.

Due to the limited number of dormitory rooms, on-campus housing is applicable but not guarantee to all exchange/visiting students. Please specify your preference in the NTU Visiting Student Program Application System if you would like to get a place on the waiting list. The result of the dormitory arrangement will be announced around one month prior to the semester’s start. You will only be notified if you got a place at one of the NTU Dormitory.

You will need to secure a student visa for your study abroad at National Taiwan University. For details and guidance check here.
