The Study Abroad program at the University of Melbourne will allow you to take courses in your major and, if you would like, you would be able to take any combination of subjects from any department, if you meet the pre-requisites for these subjects. You will be able to choose among different options for accommodations and will have an opportunity to join student clubs and activities.

Being in the southern hemisphere, Australian universities typically have an academic calendar quite different from MIT's.

Semester 1 (an equivalent of MIT's spring semester): Late February/early March to late June

Semester 2 (an equivalent of MIT's fall semester): July/August to the end of November

You must meet the admissions standards for the study abroad program at the University of Melbourne. Requirements vary; refer to your program provider/host university for details.

Applicants need to:

  • Have a GPA of 4.0 or above
  • In good academic standing
  • In good judicial standing
  • Up to date with the Communication Requirement
  • Up to date with HASS courses

Application process for the direct enrollment program at the University of Melbourne is a two-part process:

  1. Apply directly to the University of Melbourne by the stated deadline for the program/term you wish to study abroad. For more step-by-step details check here.
  2. Apply through MISTI for approval to study abroad. Apply by the deadline for the term in which you plan to study abroad.

 

 

At the University of Melbourne, you can choose from a wide range of subjects in engineering, science, social sciences and humanities. All subjects are taught in English. Review subjects by major using listings by study areas. Information on the transfer credit process at MIT can be found here.

Financial aid is portable. A few months before departure, SFS and MISTI will share with you the most up-to-date budget for the participation on the program based on an agreement with the University of Melbourne.

Admitted students who receive financial aid should make an appointment with the financial aid representative to whom they are assigned to discuss the particulars.
