Information on Direct Enroll

If you are interested in exploring MISTI's pre-approved direct enroll programs, please click on the "Pre-Approved Direct Enroll Programs" tab for more information.

If you are interested in exploring programs OUTSIDE of this list, there are a number of ways to find other opportunities overseas.

  • Contact MISTI at misti [at] mit.edu to speak with our Study Abroad Program Coordinator.
  • Reach out to your Faculty Advisor, UROP Supervisor, or Professors about universities overseas they would recommend. Not all universities offer direct enroll programs, but you can review their websites to find out.
  • Review Study Abroad search engines like Go Abroad.

Please note: You must receive approval from MISTI in order to participate in a program outside of our pre-approved list. MISTI approves programs that are academically strong, can be approved for transfer credit by your department (study abroad students must receive at least 36 units in transfer credit), and/or offer unique experiences not available at MIT.

Students can study abroad for the Fall, Spring, Academic Year, or Summer.

Please see MISTI if you have an outside program (not pre-approved program) you are interested in before applying.

You must meet the admissions standards outlined by your host program.

MISTI applicants need to:

  • Have a GPA of 4.0 or above
  • In good academic standing
  • In good judicial standing
  • Up to date with the Communication Requirement
  • Up to date with HASS courses

Contact MISTI if you have questions about your particular situation.

Three-part process:

  1. Contact MISTI (misti [at] mit.edu) to receive approval for your program (if it has not already been pre-approved).
  2. Apply directly to the partner program (university or program provider) by the stated deadline for the program/term you wish to study abroad.
  3. Apply through MISTI for approval to study abroad. Apply by the deadline for the term in which you plan to study abroad.

Academics vary by program. Refer to program provider/host university for details.

Information on the transfer credit process at MIT can be found here.

For this program, you will pay for tuition, accommodation, and other living expenses directly to the host program or in-country (depending on the category of expense) and not to MIT.

Financial aid is portable for this program as long as it has been approved by MISTI. A few months before departure, SFS and MISTI will share with students the most up-to-date budget for participation on the program based on an agreement with your host program.

Admitted students who receive financial aid should make an appointment with the financial aid representative to whom they are assigned to discuss the particulars.

Accommodations vary by program; contact the program provider or host university for details.

Visa requirements vary by program. Consult MISTI and your program provider for details.
